How exciting is a new start? A new year! A new year gives us the opportunity to begin again. I like new things.
Seven years ago my family took a mission trip to the Dominican Republic not really knowing what to expect. After a week of serving, we returned home. That night, my ten-year-old son came downstairs and said, "Mom and Dad, we need to talk. I need to do something new."
He told us that he wanted to get rid of everything in his room because he didn’t need it. When we asked him where he would sleep, he said, "I can sleep on the floor. They don’t have beds in the Dominican."
When we asked him where he would put his clothes without his chest of drawers, he said, "They didn’t have those in the Dominican, I don’t need one either."
We sent him to bed and my wife and I discussed how we would handle the situation. When he woke up the next morning and came downstairs, we told him, "We’ll let you get rid of everything that you want to get rid of except your bed. You need a good night’s sleep."
He reluctantly agreed. That was seven years ago. To this day, the only thing in his room is his bed and a desk where he does his homework. He made clear to us there is a different definition for what we need, and what we want. He’s one of the first in our family to always channel his energy and extra money to make an impact when it comes to helping other people. His new conviction resulted in a new way of thinking and doing life.
As we kick off a new year, I’m very grateful for my needs being met. I am also grateful that I have some of my wants satisfied as well. As you think about your needs this new year, I pray that you help us continue to meet the needs of those in the Dominican on a daily basis. There are a lot of NEW things we want to do this year. Your continued faithfulness in the new year will make it possible.
